Originally a Turkish word Yurt means dweling just like tepee in the Dakota language. These typical tents of the nomad tribes from the central and west Asia were used (and are used until today) in extensive regions from the coast of the Caspian Sea to Siberia. Normally skilled campers can set up the yurt in 60 minutes. If necessary it is possible to transer the yurt just like the viking tents without taking it down. The round wooden construction is thanks to its aerodynamic shape stabile even in strong gust wind. Even though the construction is self-supportive, for the yurt of bigger proportions a part of the construction are two poles that sustain the top of the roof. The wooden construction consists of folding side, roof poles and top. The canvas of the tent is composed of two parts. Just like the Indian tepee even yurts are made to use all year long, and so it is possible to safely cook on open fire. Considering the extensive region in which the yurts are used they developed during times into many local modifications that differ in shapes, proportions, used material etc. To make it easier we can divide the yurts in two main groups.
Mongolian / Kalmik yurt
These yurts have thanks to their straight roof poles the roof in the shape of a cone, They are used in the Altay mountains by the Mongolian, Buryat, Tatar and Kalmik tribes. Kyrgysz / Turkmen yurt
The roof poles of these yurts are saggy, and that gives them their typical form of a copula. They are used by the tribes living in the region of today´s Kyrgysztan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
